A lot of customers in my business ask about what we recommend for free anti-virus.  First of all, I will never say that a free solution offers you the best computer protection.  As far as NOT free, I recommend Vipre or Bit Defender.  Both are excellent.

However, there are two very good FREE solutions as well.  Here are links for both the FREE and PAID programs:

Free:
Avira AntiVirus plus Anti Spyware  (Link:  http://www.download.com/Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10322935.html?tag=contentBody;mostPopTwoColWrap&cdlPid=10986298)

AVG AntiVirus  (Link:  http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html)

NOT free:
Vipre AntiVirus plus Anti Spyware  (Link:  http://www.sunbelt-software.com/sap/c/?aff_id=56213&p=411&b=411a)

BitDefender AntiVirus plus Anti Spyware  (Link:  http://www.bitdefender.com/)
